LWFZ Wonderful new release from MOC. Nice blend of Electronica Pop with a grain of 2000s Netlabel aesthetics which makes me feel a bit nostalgic.
Favorite track: Pony Club.

about

MOC, that's Wolfgang Schmetterer and Anatol Locker. The two have been walking past each other in Munich's Glockenbach neighborhood for years until a friend brings them together. With a first meeting halfway through the route and a mutual "Well, let's see," the creative collaboration begins, lasting for 15 years and six albums.

MOC's sixth album, "Deviation," is released 18 months after its predecessor, "Diorama." The music focuses less on the MOC-typical Fender Rhodes electric piano and features more percussion, which is - finally! - recorded in person again. The basic tracks are recorded in just a few hours. Following are weeks of tweaking, improving, making things worse, discarding, and starting over again. "We spent a lot of time making sure that melodies and loops don't just repeat themselves, but that they sound a little different and fresh every time – and thus play with the listener's expectations," explains Wolfgang Schmetterer. "And we weren't afraid to unbox the digital orchestra occasionally," adds Anatol Locker. "It never gets kitschy with MOC, anyway."

The tracks always remain intricate, meandering, dreamy, or surreal. This is also reflected in the album title: Better to take a wrong turn than to drag along on well-trodden paths. As the saying goes, the best route is always to take three wrong turns. A good third of the ten tracks (such as "Ivy" or "Deviation") sound enraptured, indifferent and impressionistic. MOC takes you on more spacious detours, "Moon" or "Bohren unrund", where you can relax your brain for a few minutes. "Pony Club" or "Shinkansen," on the other hand, exert more pressure and conquer new territory beyond a stable resting pulse.

Part of the finesse specific to MOC lies in the mixes. If you listen closely, you will be promptly rewarded: a rich cosmos of sound unfolds here that invites you to listen and into which you are happy to dive deeper. The precisely chiseled acoustic stage lovingly sets MOC's exuberant soundscapes and brings a new, lively color to the album.
